Clients can pay you straight from a US bank account, alongside card, in the client portal checkout. Bank payments use ACH Direct Debit through Stripe and Stripe’s fee is capped, which matters on bigger invoices.
When you’d use this
Bank payments suit larger jobs and clients who’d rather not put a big amount on a card. They’re on by default, so most clients will already see the option.
How to set it up
- Go to Settings → Payments and check the bank payments status: active, pending or unavailable. Stripe has to enable bank payments on your connected account.
- Go to Settings → Preferences → Invoices → Bank Payments (ACH).
- Leave it on, or turn it off.
- Optionally set a minimum invoice amount for bank payments.
- Optionally add an ACH fee on top, as a percent with a cap.
What it costs
Stripe charges 0.8%, capped at $5. Fee-Lion’s platform fee on bank payments is capped at $10 per payment on Solo and $5 on Studio. If you pass card fees on to clients, that fee is waived when they pay by bank.
What the client does
At checkout the client chooses to pay by bank and connects their account through Stripe. Stripe verifies the account instantly where it can, with microdeposits as a fallback.
While a payment clears
Bank payments take 3–5 business days to clear. Until then the payment shows as Processing and isn’t counted as paid. During that time Fee-Lion won’t send overdue or reminder emails for the invoice, won’t run auto-pay on it, and won’t start a second checkout. If the debit fails, the payment is marked failed, the invoice reopens, and both you and the client are emailed.
Tip: Payment schedules work with bank payments too, so clients can pay each instalment from their bank.
FAQ
Why doesn’t my client see the bank option?
Check that bank payments show as active in Settings → Payments, that the setting is on, and that the invoice meets any minimum amount you set.
Why is a paid invoice still open?
The bank payment is still processing. It counts as paid once it clears.
