Turn on auto-pay for recurring invoices

Automation Invoices Recurring Stripe

Recurring invoices and auto-pay

Auto-pay charges your recurring invoices automatically, so neither you nor your client has to lift a finger each cycle. Payments run off-session through Stripe.

When you’d use this

Turn this on as soon as you have a single client on a recurring invoice. The reminder email you would otherwise send every month is the kind of task that feels small and quietly eats a morning across a year of clients. Auto-pay also smooths cash flow: payments land on the due date rather than whenever the client gets to their inbox, which makes next month’s cash far easier to forecast.

Because the client enrolls themselves, there is no awkward “can I keep your card on file?” conversation. Send the recurring invoice, mention that auto-pay is available in the portal, and let them switch it on.

What you need first

  • Stripe connected — auto-pay charges run through Stripe, so your account has to be linked.
  • Client enrollment — your client opts in to auto-pay from the portal, which is what lets Fee-Lion charge them off-session.

How it works

  1. Connect Stripe to your workspace so you can take payments.
  2. Have your client enroll in auto-pay from their portal.
  3. When a recurring invoice comes due, Fee-Lion charges the saved payment method automatically.

Tip: Auto-pay shines on recurring invoices — the schedule generates the invoice and Stripe collects on it without a reminder email or a manual step.

FAQ

Is the client charged without being told?

No. They opt in from the portal, so the charge is always something they chose. Each auto-pay charge still produces an invoice and a receipt they can see.

Can I turn auto-pay off for one client?

Yes. Auto-pay follows the client’s enrollment, so either of you can stop it, and the remaining recurring invoices go back to manual payment.

What happens if the amount changes?

Auto-pay charges whatever the recurring invoice is for, so if you update the recurring template the next charge reflects the new amount.
