Yes. In most places you can invoice a client without an LLC — you’d simply be operating as a sole proprietor, billing under your own legal name. An LLC is a separate legal structure with its own benefits, but it is not a requirement for sending an invoice or getting paid. Rules vary by country, state, and city, so for anything tied to taxes or liability, check with an accountant or lawyer who knows your situation.
What stays the same without an LLC
The day-to-day work of billing doesn’t change much. As a sole proprietor you can still:
- Send a professional estimate and a real invoice with your name and rates on it.
- Collect payment by card — the money lands in your own bank account.
- Add tax to an invoice and ask for a deposit up front.
- Keep clean records of who paid what and when.
Most freelancers start exactly here: a name, a skill, and a way to send a bill. You can grow into an LLC later if and when it makes sense.
What an entity can change
This is the part to talk through with a pro, because the details depend on where you live. In general, a formal entity like an LLC may affect things like personal liability protection, how you file taxes, and whether you bill under a business name instead of your own. None of that stops you from invoicing today — it’s about how your business is structured underneath, not whether you can send the invoice.
Tip: Whether you’re a sole proprietor or an LLC, set your tax handling once under Settings → Preferences so every new estimate and invoice picks it up automatically. One less thing to remember per client.
How Fee-Lion handles billing under your own name
Fee-Lion doesn’t ask for an LLC — it asks for your brand. You can run your whole billing loop under your personal name from day one.
- Open Settings → Preferences → Branding and add your name (or business name) and logo. That’s what clients see on every estimate, invoice, and portal page.
- Set your tax default and deposit percentage in Preferences so they apply to new documents automatically.
- Create an estimate from the left sidebar, send it, and let your client approve it in the no-login portal.
- Convert the approved estimate to an invoice with one click — same name, same branding.
When it’s time to take card payments, connect your account under connect-stripe-to-get-paid. Stripe lets individuals and sole proprietors onboard, not just registered companies — so payments flow into your own Stripe account, with a small platform fee on top. You don’t need an entity to flip the Pay button on.
Branding under your name vs. a business name
If you later form an LLC or just start trading under a studio name, you don’t rebuild anything. Update the name and logo in Branding, confirm the details on your Stripe account, and future invoices carry the new identity. Your history stays intact.
Tip: Even without an entity, keeping every invoice and expense in one place makes tax time far calmer. Fee-Lion’s reports let you export-a-pack-for-your-accountant when the season rolls around.
