Billing Invoices Time

Billing tracked time

Once you’ve logged your hours, you don’t have to retype them. Select your unbilled time entries and bill them to an invoice, where each one becomes a line item.

When you’d use this

Bill time at a fixed rhythm: weekly for active projects, monthly for retainers, or at each milestone. Because the entries already carry hours and rates, the invoice is mostly a review step: check the descriptions read well for the client, group small entries if the list is long, and send. Waiting until a project ends to bill all of its time is how invoices balloon into something a client pushes back on; smaller, regular invoices get paid faster.

Bill your hours

  1. Find your unbilled time entries.
  2. Select the entries you want to bill.
  3. Bill them to an invoice.
  4. Each selected entry lands on the invoice as a line item, ready to review and send.

From hours to dollars

Because the entries already carry their hours and rate, the invoice line items come through priced and ready. The hours leave the unbilled pile, so they stop counting as money on the table.

Tip: If you haven’t started the invoice yet, you can create one first and bring the time onto it. See how to create an invoice.

FAQ

Can the client see the individual time entries?

They see the line items you send, which carry the hours, rate, and description. You can edit the descriptions on the invoice before sending.

What if I bill the wrong entries?

Remove the line from the draft invoice and the time returns to the unbilled pile. Once the invoice is sent, void it and rebuild rather than editing.

Can I bill time from several projects on one invoice?

Yes, as long as they belong to the same client. Each entry becomes its own line so the client can see which project it relates to.
