Pull Your Income and Expenses for Tax Time

Exports Reports Tax Time

The Fee-Lion Reports view showing revenue and expense totals with date-range filters and CSV and PDF export buttons.

When tax season rolls around, your accountant wants two clean numbers: what you earned and what you spent. The good news is Fee-Lion has been quietly tracking both all year. Here’s how to pull them into tidy files you can hand off in minutes, not weekends.

Pull your income for the year

Start with the money that came in. Open Reports in the left sidebar and head to your revenue view.

  1. Click Reports in the sidebar, then open the Revenue drilldown.
  2. Set the date range to your tax year (for most freelancers, January 1 through December 31).
  3. Review the totals broken down by client, month, and project so the numbers make sense before you export.
  4. Click Export and choose CSV for your accountant’s spreadsheet, or PDF for a clean summary you can file.

The revenue report reflects what your invoices actually collected, including card payments that landed in your Stripe and any offline payments you recorded by hand. That’s your top-line income, ready to go.

Tip: If you’ve been tagging invoices by client type, service, or anything else, those tags carry into the export. That makes it easy for your accountant to separate, say, retainer income from one-off project work without you re-sorting a single row.

Pull your expenses

Now the deductible side. Every expense you’ve logged through the year is sitting in one place, waiting to lower your tax bill.

  1. Open Expenses in the sidebar.
  2. Filter to the same tax-year date range you used for revenue.
  3. Confirm your categories and tags are set the way your accountant likes them (software, travel, contractors, and so on).
  4. Click Export and pick CSV or PDF, matching the format you used for income.

Because expenses can be attributed to projects, your export already shows where the money went and which work it supported. If you’ve kept categories tidy all year, this step is mostly a quick review and a click.

Hand it off cleanly

You now have two files: income and expenses, same date range, same format. A few small habits make this handoff painless every year:

  • Use CSV when your accountant works in a spreadsheet or imports into tax software, and PDF when they just want a readable summary for the file.
  • Keep your categories and tags consistent as you go, so December you isn’t untangling a year of guesswork.
  • Record offline payments and cash expenses as they happen, so nothing falls outside the app and slips off the report.

That’s it. Two reports, two exports, and your numbers are ready for whoever does your taxes. The work you did to keep Fee-Lion current all year is exactly what makes this part fast.
