Tags turn a flat pile of invoices into something you can slice. Add a few labels and your reports can break out billed amount by exactly the categories you care about.
When you’d use this
Tags earn their keep the first time you ask a question the standard reports cannot answer. How much of this year’s revenue was rush work? What did the holiday campaign bill across six clients? Which invoices came through a referral partner? Decide the three or four questions you want to answer at year end and create exactly those tags now. Tagging as you go takes seconds; reconstructing it from memory in December takes an afternoon.
Tag your invoices
- Open an invoice — or create a new one.
- Add one or more tags, such as rush, recurring, or retainer.
- Save the invoice. Apply the same tags consistently across invoices so the categories stay meaningful.
Drill down in reports
Once invoices are tagged, your reports can drill down on them — showing the billed amount per tag. That makes it easy to answer questions like how much rush work you billed this quarter, or how much of your revenue comes from retainers.
Tip: Pick a small, consistent set of tags up front. A handful of well-chosen labels reports far more cleanly than dozens of one-off ones.
FAQ
Can I tag an invoice after it has been sent?
Yes. Tags are internal and do not change the document, so you can add or remove them at any time without affecting what the client sees.
Are tags shared with expenses?
Expenses have their own tags, which is useful for matching revenue and costs on the same campaign; use the same wording on both so the reports line up.
Do tags appear on the invoice PDF?
No. Tags are for your reporting only and never print or show in the client portal.
